Planting Chinese cabbage. Only a few varieties,
such as Pe-Tsai, Cheefoo, Wong Bok, and Chihili, are grown in the United
States, but this delicately flavored salad plant is becoming increasingly
popular in this country. It is sometimes called celery cabbage although
it is not related to celery.
Chinese cabbage does best as an autumn crop
in the northern states. Southern gardeners should produce it only as a
winter crop. It is not a difficult plant to grow but requires a rich,
moist, well-drained soil. Sow the seeds thinly in drills or spot them
in place and thin to about io inches apart. Set the rows 2 feet apart,
and cover the seeds to a depth of 1/2 inch. One packet of seeds is enough
for zoo feet of row.
