Planting chives. Small, onion-like plants
growing in thick clumps and used for flavouring. Chives flourish in many
climatic and soil conditions, as do onions. There are no recognized varieties.
Only a few clumps are needed for the average home garden. Plant in rows
16 inches apart, with the plants 2 inches apart in the rows. Chives may
be started from seeds or by transplanting clumps of bulbs. Cover the seeds
to a depth of 1/2 inch. Occasional resetting is necessary because the
clumps, after several years, become so thick that they develop poorly. |
